Lenten Greeting~

I am reading a book titled: The Art of Receiving and Giving. Its main focus is on consent in both offering ourselves and in receiving from others.  It is really helping me think about how I interact not only with others but how I find myself worthy of receiving what others want to offer me.  This Lenten season I have been intentionally sending us away from our worship time together with God’s words “Beloved”.  We began our Lenten journey with the Mark passage recounting Jesus’ Baptism: “In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And just as He was coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove upon Him. And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” (Mark 1:9-11)

God does not only see His Son as Beloved. God sees all of us as Beloved. Beloved is a term used to express special love, favor, and significance. Beloved is often used to describe individuals who are deeply loved by God. The concept of being Beloved in the Bible emphasizes the unconditional and divine love that God has for his followers. Understanding oneself as Beloved in the Biblical context can offer comfort, assurance, and a sense of belonging to God. Reflecting on the Beloved status in the Bible can inspire gratitude, devotion, and a deeper connection to one's faith.

Did you know that you are a Beloved creation of God? Do you see yourself as “fearfully and wonderfully made? (Psalm 139:14)? Do you live as though you are indeed Beloved?

“Even before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes.” (Ephesians 1:4) Even before you were born, God loved you. Even before you received the approval of your parents and guardians, God loved you. Even after you encounter failure or sin, God loves you. Beloved, do you allow yourself to BE LOVED by your God? I know I have struggled with accepting God’s love. Once I was reminded that it is a gift that is being offered to me I really want to be a grateful recipient. To see myself as worthy as God sees me as worthy. Despite my own shortcomings, despite my failings, despite whatever excuses I use to keep myself at a distance from my God, I am His Beloved.

“It really boils down to this: that all life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tired into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one destiny, affects all indirectly.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

We have been Created for a relationship of mutuality. To be in community and interaction that not only calls us to receive the undeserved salvation offered through Jesus but also to join in the mission to give to others in love, grace and mercy. Oftentimes we acknowledge what Jesus did for us when dying upon a cross, but do we truly, completely, receive what that entailed and really means for us. Or is this just a nice story of how things have always been and a comfortable space for us to live out our days, free of responsibility? A relationship of mutuality means that not only are we offered something we then have the opportunity to give in return. Not only giving love back to God but to those “others” that God loves. To give of ourselves in a way that may at times be inconvenient or uncomfortable but with the understanding that we are a part of something beyond ourselves. To be a part of God’s Beloved community is to allow ourselves to BE LOVED and to ensure others know that they too can BE LOVED by God.

And! Imagine what others have to offer us!

Just as Advent tends to do, Lent is swiftly passing us by. Let’s not miss our chance to dig deeper in our faith and the love that God sent in His Son Jesus, so that we all may have life… AND have it to the fullest.  There are some tough realities in being a child of God. There are some tough realities in the capabilities of mankind and the battles in this world. These are all a part of our journey, and unfortunately, as Jesus demonstrated, things that must be faced. But, we do not journey alone. We do not have to join the world of chaos and pain, we can embrace our title as a Beloved child of God and allow ourselves to BE LOVED. What a gift.

Please join us for worship Sunday mornings at 10:45am in-person or via ZOOM. We are so blessed to have a faith family that spans miles and miles, generations upon generations, and love upon love as we all navigate life together. With Jesus, through Jesus and for Jesus!

Our next FREE Community dinner is March 30th at 6pm. Yes! This is the night before Easter. We will be sharing a meal and then at 7pm join together for a brief service as we honor Holy Saturday.  Celebration of the Resurrection will be March 31st at 10:45am.

Our church is excited to be planning our 10th Annual Red, White and Blue 5k on July 4th! We are very excited and would love you to join us. You can join in the race, help us serve and greet people and/or come to be cheerleaders as we invite people to start their holiday off with us. Please help us spread the word! Registration will be available on our church website soon at: www/

We continue to provide food for Grab and Go lunches at The Living Well once a month, snacks for Penn Yan Elementary School and our Blessing Cabinet remains open and available to our neighbors offering food and personal care items. I am so grateful for the generosity of our church and the many ways we continue to seek to “Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World!”

If we haven’t seen you in a while please know that you are special to us and missed! Even if you can’t make it to worship we would love to hear from you! If you are struggling physically, mentally or spiritually, please know that we love you and are here to help as we can! Please reach out. If you are feeling distant or disconnected either from the Branchport UMC community or from God I would love to talk to you and keep you on our prayer list. Please know that you are a Beloved.

Continue this Lenten journey determined and emboldened by the knowledge that you are not alone. We get the joy and privilege to share the Gospel with others and to bring the Light of the World to areas of darkness.  “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3:12).

 With Gratitude and Appreciation~
